Domus Pius IX

Domus Pius IX is a volunteer-run cultural club and working studio in Cospicua, one of Malta's historic Three Cities, dedicated to a remarkably specific art form: pictures composed entirely from dyed rice and table salt. The technique is a form of Maltese ephemeral folk art, and the club's founder is working to establish a formal school to teach and preserve it. Visitors can watch artists at work, view finished pieces up close, and engage directly with the artists about their materials and process — reviewers consistently note the warmth and communicativeness of the studio's owner.
