This monument on the Senglea seafront honours the Maltese mariners who for centuries sailed into uncertain waters for trade, naval service, and fishing. Carved from a single 9.5-tonne block of basalt, it depicts a sailor held in farewell by his wife and child — capturing the anguish of departure with concentrated force rather than ornament. Known locally as 'The Sailor's Departure', the sculpture sits directly on the waterfront with the Grand Harbour opening behind it, one of the Mediterranean's most storied natural harbours. Away from Valletta's busier sites, it offers a quiet, contemplative stop with the water close enough to hear.
