Collachio

The Collachio is the medieval residential enclave at the heart of Birgu (Vittoriosa), where the Knights of St. John settled after arriving in Malta in 1530. Mirroring their earlier arrangement in Rhodes, the Knights established a restricted zone within the town — its boundaries once marked by small stone columns, one of which still stands at the piazza that fronted the Auberge d'Allemagne. The narrow limestone streets are lined with auberges built for the Order's individual langues, or national divisions, giving the quarter a legible medieval urban grammar that survives largely intact. Today the Collachio rewards slow exploration on foot: weathered heraldic carvings on doorways, sunlit dead-end alleys, and an almost complete absence of commercial noise make it one of the quietest and most atmospheric corners of the Maltese archipelago.
