Hochschober

At 3,242 metres, the Hochschober is the fourth-highest summit in the Schobergruppe range of the Hohe Tauern and the mountain that lends the entire group its name. The naming stems from a 19th-century cartographic error: when geographer Adolf Schaubach mapped the Schobergruppe in 1845, he incorrectly identified the Hochschober as the highest peak south of the Peischlachtörl — the name stuck regardless. Its glaciated north face is a defining landmark visible from the village of Kals in the valley below. The ascent is a genuine high-alpine route requiring glacier experience, rewarded by a wide summit panorama stretching across the eastern Alps and, on clear days, toward the Dolomites.
