Birgu Waterfront

Birgu — officially Vittoriosa — is one of Malta's Three Cities lining the Grand Harbour opposite Valletta, and its waterfront is among the most atmospheric walks in the country. The massive Fort St Angelo looming above the promenade served as the headquarters of the Knights of St John for centuries and was the linchpin of Malta's defence during the Great Siege of 1565, when the Knights repelled an Ottoman invasion. The British later turned the harbour into a key Mediterranean naval base, a legacy still visible in the occasional warships moored in the creek. The easiest approach is by water taxi from Valletta's Barrakka Lift — a ten-minute crossing for two euros with unbroken views of the limestone bastions. Beyond the quay, narrow medieval streets wind into residential Birgu, where locals still live among 500-year-old stone houses.
