Monument to Sir Alexander Ball

The Monument to Sir Alexander Ball stands in the Lower Barrakka Gardens in Valletta, erected in 1810 to honour the British admiral who served as Malta's first Civil Commissioner following Napoleon's withdrawal from the island. Attributed to Maltese architect Giorgio Pullicino, it takes the form of a small ancient Greek peripteral temple — a columned stone pavilion that sits in composed quiet above the Grand Harbour. Ball was unusually popular among the Maltese population, and the monument was funded by public subscription, a rare tribute from a colonised people to a British official. Today the shaded gardens around it offer a calm retreat from Valletta's busy streets, with the monument itself small enough to feel like a private discovery rather than a grand civic statement.
