Fuq l-iljun

"Fuq l-iljun" means simply "on the lion" in Maltese, naming a street corner where Archbishop Street meets East Street in central Valletta. The heraldic lion sculpture that gives the spot its name is the family emblem of Antonio Manoel de Vilhena, the 66th Grand Master of the Order of St. John, who left a significant mark on 18th-century Malta — most famously through the construction of the Teatro Manoel, still one of Europe's oldest working theatres. The corner sits close to the Lower Barrakka Gardens and offers a brief open view toward the Grand Harbour. It registers less as a formal attraction and more as a quiet, layered street detail: a piece of knightly heraldry embedded in the everyday fabric of the old capital.
