Büro Center Nibelungenplatz

City Gate, formerly the Buero Center Nibelungenplatz and originally Shell House, is a high-rise on the northern edge of Frankfurt's Westend. When it opened on 15 October 1966 at almost 90 meters, it was one of the city's first proper towers and housed Shell's German headquarters; architect Gerhard Weber designed it in classic international postwar modern style, with a grid facade and a cantilevered ground floor. A major 1993 renovation raised it to 110 meters and noticeably reshaped its silhouette. It is still an office building today and remains the tallest in the Nordend district, a quiet witness to the era when Frankfurt's skyline was just being sketched in.
