Bortelhorn

The Bortelhorn is a 3,194 m summit in the Lepontine Alps, sitting precisely on the Swiss-Italian border in the canton of Valais. Its western flank holds the small Bortel Glacier, with meltwater feeding the Bortelsee — an artificial reservoir created between 1987 and 1990 to serve the Bortel hydroelectric plant below. The Bortelhütte mountain hut at 2,107 m provides a traditional base for the ascent along the western face. The climb demands solid alpine fitness but rewards with sweeping views across the Valais and Ticino Alps, with clear-day sightlines extending into Lombardy.
