Balmhorn

The Balmhorn, at 3,697 metres, is the highest peak in the Balmhorn Group of the western Bernese Alps and gives its name to the entire massif. The mountain is heavily glaciated, with névé and ice fields covering its flanks well below the summit — a defining feature that sets it apart from neighbouring rock peaks between the Lötschental and Gasterntal valleys. It was first climbed in 1864 by Francis Fox Tuckett with guides Christian and Ulrich Lauener. Today the Balmhorn is a classic high-alpine route requiring glacier travel equipment and experience; the south ridge offers the most straightforward line. The summit delivers a broad panorama across the central Valais and Bernese Alps on clear days.
