Bietschhorn

The Bietschhorn stands at 3,934 metres as one of the most distinctive and technically demanding summits in the southern Bernese Alps, rising above the Lötschental valley in the Swiss canton of Valais. For centuries the local population knew it as the 'Nesthorn', a name that survives today in the adjacent Nest Glacier to the west. Its first ascent via the steep rocky north ridge is considered among the boldest achievements of early alpine mountaineering. The peak forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site of Jungfrau-Aletsch and shares the skyline with the vast Aletsch Glacier system. A historic rockfall from the Kleines Nesthorn permanently reshaped the northern ridge, a reminder of the mountain's geological restlessness. Reaching the summit demands full alpine experience and equipment; the reward is an expansive panorama across the high peaks of Valais and the Bernese Oberland.
