Aletschhorn

The Aletschhorn rises to 4,194 metres as the second-highest peak in the Bernese Alps, surpassed only by the Finsteraarhorn, and sits within the UNESCO World Natural Heritage region of Jungfrau-Aletsch-Bietschhorn. Its north face feeds the Grosse Aletschfirn, while the mountain serves as the source of both the Oberaletsch and Mittelaletsch glaciers — tributaries of the largest glacial system in the Alps. The first ascent was completed in 1859 by a British-Swiss rope team led by Francis Fox Tuckett, placing the Aletschhorn among the classic objectives of alpinism's Golden Age. Today the peak remains a serious mountaineering objective, with crevassed glacier approaches and mixed terrain that reward experienced alpinists with sweeping views across the Valais and Bernese high ridges.
