Bürgersaalkirche

The Buergersaal on Munich's Neuhauser Strasse is a Baroque prayer and assembly hall built in 1709-10 by Giovanni Antonio Viscardi for the Marian Men's Congregation. Since the high altar was consecrated in 1778 it has also served as a church, the Buergersaalkirche, though it is not officially a parish. The lower church holds the tomb of Jesuit priest Rupert Mayer (1876-1945), interned in Sachsenhausen concentration camp under the Nazis and beatified in 1987; his shrine still draws pilgrims. The upper church displays Ignaz Guenther's elaborate Guardian Angel altar, one of the masterworks of Bavarian Rococo. Free entry, easy to miss in the busy pedestrian zone.
