Manegg Castle

Manegg Castle ruin lies hidden on a side ridge of the Albis above Zurich-Leimbach. Built in the 13th century by the Manesse family, it was the seat of Zurich mayor Rudiger Manesse, who between 1290 and 1304 had the famous Codex Manesse collection of Minnesinger poetry assembled. The castle burned down in 1409 and has remained a ruin ever since. Today a pleasant footpath leads from Leimbach station through the forest to the little-known site, where wall fragments lie scattered among beech and oak. A plaque recalls the connection to the Manesse Codex, now in Heidelberg. From the path above the ruin the view opens over the Sihl valley.
