Magisterial Palace
The Magisterial Palace stands at the heart of Fort St. Angelo, the medieval fortress guarding the entrance to Valletta's Grand Harbour, and once served as the official residence of the Grand Master of the Order of St. John. The Knights of Malta expanded the fort into the island's primary defensive stronghold from the 16th century onward, and the palace — a modest but dignified limestone structure — occupies the upper courtyard at the fort's highest point. Visitors can freely explore the courtyard, though the palace interior itself remains closed, lending the site an unusually quiet, almost frozen-in-time quality. The upper terrace offers wide views across the Grand Harbour, the Valletta skyline, and the open Mediterranean.
