Maximilianeum Munich

Munich

Striking historicist building on the Isar high bank — home to the Bavarian State Parliament and a gifted students foundation since 1876.

The Maximilianeum crowns the eastern high bank of the Isar in the Haidhausen district, forming the grand terminus of Munich Maximilianstrasse, one of Bavaria most prestigious boulevards. King Maximilian II commissioned the building in a unique style blending Gothic, Renaissance, and Oriental elements. Since 1876 it has housed the Maximilianeum Foundation, which provides free accommodation and support to exceptionally gifted students from Bavaria. Since 1949, it has also served as the seat of the Bavarian State Parliament. The elaborate stage-set architecture creates an imposing visual effect when viewed from across the Maximilian Bridge.
