War Memorial

The War Memorial in Floriana, just outside Valletta's city gates, is a slender stone obelisk commemorating Maltese and Commonwealth soldiers who died in both World Wars. Inaugurated on 11 November 1938 by Governor Charles Bonham-Carter, it was originally dedicated to the dead of World War I alone; in 1949 it was rededicated to encompass those killed in World War II as well. Inscribed panels record individual names, and visitors still come to trace fallen family members among them. A permanent flame burns at the base as an ongoing mark of respect. The surroundings are immaculately maintained, creating a composed and dignified atmosphere amid the busier approaches to Valletta's fortified old town.
