Victoria Lines

The Victoria Lines are a 10.25-kilometre fortification wall slicing across Malta from coast to coast, built by the British during the Victorian era and inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1998. Constructed along a natural fault line between the 1870s and 1890s, the wall was designed to halt any enemy advance from the northwest of the island — though it was never seriously tested in battle. The full trail from Fort Madliena to Kuncizzjoni Chapel stretches around 20 kilometres, passing crumbling gun batteries and watchtowers with sweeping views over the Dis valley and Malta's limestone garrigue interior. A spot known locally as 'Top of the World' offers particularly wide panoramas. The route is poorly signed and lacks formal infrastructure, giving it a rough, exploratory character that trail runners and hikers rate highly precisely because of its neglected solitude.
