History in Zurich

Zürich's history reveals itself across the city in tangible, layered form. The Lindenhof hill marks the site of a Roman customs post, one of the earliest traces of settlement here. The Grossmünster and Fraumünster have shaped the medieval old town for centuries, and the narrow lanes of Niederdorf preserve much of that historic fabric. The Cabaret Voltaire on Spiegelgasse is where Dadaism emerged in 1916. ETH Zurich reflects over a century and a half of scientific tradition. The Bahnhofstrasse, Hardbrücke, and Langstrasse document urban transformation, while the Frauenbadi, Kunsthaus Zürich, and Letzigrund each carry their own distinct chapters of the city's social and cultural past.
