Yağ Camii

The Yağ Camii — literally the "Oil Mosque" — stands on Alimünif Street in Adana's old town and carries a rare double identity: built as an Armenian church, it was converted into a mosque in 1501 under Ottoman rule, making it one of the earliest surviving Ottoman-era religious structures in the city. The conversion was typical of the architectural reordering that accompanied Ottoman expansion across Anatolia in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, and traces of the original church fabric are still legible beneath later mosque fittings. The building remains an active place of worship today, drawing both worshippers and visitors curious about its layered confessional history.
