Il-Bieb tal-Bombi
Also known as: Portes des Bombes
Porte des Bombes — in Maltese Il-Bieb tal-Bombi — is a baroque ornamental city gate in Floriana, the suburb immediately outside Valletta's own fortifications. It was built in 1721 under Grand Master Ramon Perellos y Roccaful as part of the Floriana Lines, the outer defensive ring guarding the Maltese capital. Designed by military engineer Charles François de Mondion, the gate originally had a single arch; a second was added in the mid-18th century to handle growing traffic. Of the four original gateways through the Floriana Lines, this double-arched passage is the only one still standing. It remains a working entrance used daily by pedestrians and vehicles, and serves as the symbolic threshold between the wider island and the UNESCO-listed city of Valletta.
