Architecture in Aachen

Aachen's cityscape brings together more than twelve centuries of building history. At its heart stands the Cathedral, whose Carolingian palatine chapel ranks among the oldest surviving church structures north of the Alps; the adjoining Domhof courtyard and the Cathedral Treasury form a coherent ensemble around it. The Gothic Town Hall rises nearby, while the Annakirche and the Bilal-Moschee represent later periods of the city's architectural development. The Belvedere water tower and the King Baudouin Tower add industrial and military layers to the story, and Burg Rode marks the outer edge of the historic fabric. The Elisengarten and Pontstraße tie these varied layers together at street level.
